As a child, what was your favorite book? Have you reread that book since your childhood?
I read a lot, but the first one that came to mind was THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH! I reread it last year and it was fantastic. If I find a husband willing to humor my literary whims, my firstborn will be named Milo.
Ooooootherwise, I read…
- all of the Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle stories
- The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle
- “MOM! CAN I LIVE ON A BOAT?”
- “Yes. Don’t get scurvy.”
- all of the Wayside School books
- anything by Roald Dahl
- all of the Shel Silverstein poems
- Anne of Green Gables
- Eugenia and I bonded over our love for the series
- all of the Babysitter’s Club stories
- one time I wrote to Ann M. Martin and she wrote back to me saying she liked my name
- AND she used my name in Karen’s Pizza Party
- I felt like a celebrity
- and I read this later, but Three Cheers for Tacky is an effing great book.
AGH I LOVE READING
I just answered this Featured Question; you can answer it too!

I was into all of those except for The Babysitters’ Club – I was a Nancy Drew girl instead.
I read a LOT too. Judy Blume, Cynthia Voight, Astrid Lindgren, Roald Dahl, Anne of Green Gables, Secret Garden, the Boxcar Children, the Babysitters Club, Adrian Mole, Shel Silverstein.. man this list could go on and on and on
Roald Dahl and Ann M. Martin basically sum up my childhood. I read every single book Dahl wrote, and all of the Babysitter’s Club and the Babysitter’s Little Sister. I called them “Karen books”. My mom would yell all the time because my “Karen books” were all over the house– in the kitchen, in the bathroom, in her room, in the laundry room. I’m so freaking jealous your name is in there, and I’m going to go have to look it up now!
My favorite Dahl books were The Twits, The BFG, The Witches, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More, Esio Trot… there are so many. He writes the most interesting stories, that I can’t wait to share with my children!
I used to read so much as a kid! I loved Robert Munsch. I had SO many of the Babysitters Club books. I read a few Nancy Drews and Boxcar Children. There was a book called Heidi that I really liked too. To name a few.
Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle! She taught me how to make a bed without wrinkles! *looks over at rumpled bed that hasn’t been made in weeks*
Anne of Green Gables is great!
A Little Princess was my favorite, though. And I was more into the Boxcar Children and Nancy Drew series than Babysitter Club.
ugh i would have loved to name a boy atticus but unfortunately, i did not end up with someone who would humor my literary whims. LOL. maybe a dog one day?
um wtf natalia i had no idea you were basically a character in the little sister books.
I think you and I must have been the same person as a child because I love ALL of those books. Especially Anne of Green Gables. And Roald Dahl. And Wayside School. And Charlotte Doyle. Children’s books are the greatest. I keep trying to convince my husband to name our someday child Gilbert, but so far he’s wickedly opposed.
i wish i could still read those books and enjoy them! it’s really hard growing up and all…!
The first that come to mind are: Corduroy and Ben Finds a Friend. I was an only child for the young years of my life, so I longed for adventurous bears and friendly animals.
Those were my first books…
I later read everything I could (including the Babysitter’s Club, etc.) except for Goosebumps. My mom, a third grade teacher, wouldn’t let me read anything that didn’t have some literary merit. She liked the Boxcar Children, and the Babysitter’s Club was pushing it, but she wouldn’t let me read Goosebumps.
Come to think of it, she wouldn’t let me read Helter Skelter until I was fourteen.
I was obsessed in a bad way with the Babysitter’s Club and Little Sister books. I think I just about read all of them.
My mom loved the Phantom Tollbooth. I have a profound love for:
1. Anything by Roald Dahl (namely the Witches and the Twits)
2. Anything by Shel Silverstein (I thought his books were awesome, but he’s CREEPY!)
3. The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle
4. Fruits Basket (be warned, NOT A BOOK FOR LITTLE KIDS)
5. The Doll People series (by…Ann M. Martin! LOL)
6. The Royal Diaries series (I have a thing for the history books)
7. Most of the Dear America series (like I said, a thing for the history books)
Um… that’s all I can think of right now. But I’ll tell you this: I read a lot more than this. A LOT more.
I LOVE THE PHANTOM TOOLBOOTH! I enthusiastically gasped when I saw your post mentioning the book.
Thanks for the moment of happiness you gave me with that, Natalia.
My favorite was Harriet the Spy. I read it about once a year.
Ann M. Martin? Really? Wow!
I still have the hundreds of my BSC books.. haha
Didn’t like the little sister ones too much, though =D
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was such a good book. I wish I had the chance to read it again. I also liked the Captain Underpants series.
any books from Enid Blyton! hehe..
btw, really sorry to disturb but..errr…a lil’ help here puh-lese??

I LOVED Baby-sitters Club books!
The Summer of The Swans by Betsy Byars and The Blue Castle by L. M. Montgomery are my two favorites from childhood.
But Anne of Green Gables and the subsequent novels are great too. As well as Little Women.
Natalia, I have a question: someone just gave me a mini on an old post months ago. But I noticed that my credits didn’t go up. Is it because the post was too old?
edit: I just checked again and it turns out that person left me 3 minis in my old posts, totalling 220 credits. I need all the credit I can get.
You didn’t read War And Peace as a child? What was wrong with you?
“Big Al” and “Where The Wild Things Are”, which is being made into a movie!
Shel Silverstein is the shit.
…and I admit to having read the Babysitter’s Club books. Only because as a kid, I loved reading, and read every single book that my sister read. We were book fiends.
I need help. What is this whole “connecting to facebook” thing about?
I don’t have a facebook, and the things I post on my xanga aren’t meant to be public.
How can I counter-act this facebook thing?
@just_abigail_grace - are you subbed to the Xanga Team blog? there’s a link on that post that tells you how to turn it off on your editor settings – http://thexangateam.xanga.com/697049039/publish-your-blogs-to-facebook/.
also, if you don’t have a facebook, there’s really nothing to worry about – it’s just an option for those who have an account there and do want to share their posts on the site.
Who wouldn’t forget Dr. Seuss?
I remember the Ms. Piggle Wiggle story about the girl who didn’t want to bathe and her parents planted little seeds on her and she woke up with plants all over her or something like that…. that was soooo long ago, goodness. Good times.
You just summed up some of the best books I read as a kid. (But I would also include The Boxcar Children)
I had forgotten about Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. Those were great!!
wayside schoolso weird and wonderful, haha
