  • I am a native Midwesterner. We are accustomed to being bombarded with subzero temperatures and feet of snow, shrugging it all off despite panicked newscasts and wearing four pairs of socks before going outside.

That being said, here on the east coast, people have no idea how to deal with snow. It is my understanding that they’ve confused precipitation types and acted accordingly.

You’re doing it wrong, bro. I have seen more people walk around carrying umbrellas in the snow and I have the urge to kick them. If you’re worried about snow getting on you, wear a coat…or a hat…or wrap yourself in Saran wrap. Is it raining? No? Leave it at home.

Does this only happen on the east coast or have you seen this happen elsewhere?

  • It also helps serve as a windblock.

If it’s all he’s got, it’s much better than nothing!

  • In Colorado, where I am, we do pretty well with snow. Sure, there are the people that think an inch means being snowed in, but for the most part, we all do really well in it. Blizzards? We drive where we need to unless its REALLY bad (talking FEET of snow, not inches). The work place rarely closes. Its funny to see how others freak out, isnt it?

  • It’s almost everywhere.  What’s funny is that the person in the pic has a hat, and isn’t using it in that weather.

  • Stop picking on us!

  • I’m totally guilty of this! Umbrellas do not help when it’s snowing but no one told this Florida girl that. =( I know now from experience. No more umbrellas in the snow!

  • Hah, people here in Cali are freakin’ out when it dips below forty. THE NERDS

  • awwww, come on back to Ohio where we know to JUST STAY INSIDE!

  • We don’t get much snow in my part of Texas, but if it even threatens to snow people panic, make a run on the grocery stores to stock up and then batten down the hatches and refuse to leave home until it’s warmed up.  And don’t get me started on ice.  Yikes!

  • This morning, I bundled up with a coat, scarf, earmuffs, gloves, and snowboots. AND I used an umbrella.

People need to use an umbrella when it snows here in the city because we walk around for extended periods of time. It’s not like in the suburbs where you only need to walk hurriedly from your car to your building in the snow for just a few minutes.

Anyway, resist your urge to kick NYers. They’ll kick back! (I know I would)

  • ahahahahahahahaha  (midwestern gal myself)

  • We midwesterners are not afraid to look like nerds in our parkas, scarves, ear warmers and mittens. And we have the sense to pull our hoods up, not just when it’s snowing, but when it’s cold and windy. And @spiritedsherry - I am about to bundle up and WALK to the post office and bank because I will spend less time walking where I need to go in 13 degree weather than clearing a foot-and-a-half of snow off my vehicle and shoveling the driveway (things you city dwellers don’t have to deal with).

  • No, I’ve never seen that in Chicago. I’ve seen that in news feeds from NY and it cracks me up.

  • i live in georgia, and when the temperature dips you see all kinds of confused wardrobes… people wearing rain jackets, people wearing all-out ski gear, people wearing nothing but long-sleeved shirts and ear-muffs, people wearing flip flops… and some ridiculous combinations of all of the above. add that to even a small chance of severe winter weather, and all the batteries, water bottles, and canned whatnots immediately fly off the shelves… i can’t speak for anywhere else, but things are certainly do get crazy around here!

  • Its better than californians…they cant drive when it rains.

  • I’ve never seen it….ever. And I’ve never been to the east coast, so…that tells you something.

  • I’m originally from Illinois, living in Washington state. People here refuse to use umbrellas. I don’t get it! And the state pretty much shuts down with a dusting of snow.

  • LOL. Asians hold up umbrellas for everything: the rain, the sun… probably the snow as well!

  • I’m still in the midwest. ;) I love how people there think that an umbrella will KEEP THEM WARM. *sigh* Poor people.

  • In Asia, people use umbrellas when it’s not even raining.

  • I am a native Northeaster. We’re even more accustomed to being pelted with snow and we are used to wearing 3 coats before we go outside. I miss New York: it’s so hot in Arizona! I hate this place! :( (
Will you come take me with you to New York City, Natalia?!?! I can get one of my friends to come pick me up from La Guardia (is that in NYC?) or JFK(I’m not sure I haven’t been on a plane in years :( it sucks)

  • @bluedreamer85 - why not? is rain thatrare in California? Being a Northeaster means that I’m really not used to the West. Especially the heat.

  • Hon, do you even want me to TELL you what happens when it snows in HOUSTON?  It’s ugly, trust me.

  • I’ve not seen any people around here (Eastern TN) doing that with umbrellas. Heck, I don’t think people here even know umbrellas have been invented yet   Everyone here does have a major cow with snow though. It snowed Monday about an average of 1 inch throughout the whole county, and schools are still going to be closed on Thursday!

  • Oh wow I never knew you’re not suppose to wear an umbrella when it is snowing… I always figured that it would be nice to use an umbrella when it was snowing gently like in the movies you know? hehe guess I was wrong about that :(

  • ok, i have to disagree on this one. snow, while not rain, is still precipitation. i like to call it a “rain bomb;” it may not be wet now, but it will be once you come inside. and i don’t want the snow to melt all over my nice, warm jacket, as having a wet jacket kinda defeats the point of having a jacket.

alo, i agree with spiritedsherry on this one. if i’m just walking to and from my car, no umbrella need be involved. walking a dozen blocks around slow, stupid NYC toursits? yeah, i want something to keep the not-currently-but- soon-to-be-wet precipitation off my shit.

  • I have never seen that before, and I absolutely love it. You should make this a ‘you’re doing it wrong, bro’ Mini…
