  • It’s Not Very Nutrient Dense

    Consumer Reports came out with findings on cereal earlier this week and parents are panicking. Wait, you mean to tell me that kids’ cereals have a little bit of three metric tons of sugar per bowl? Say it ain’t so.

    (I used to put sugar on top of Frosted Flakes. This explains my 84 visits to the dentist and my insatiable need for more.sugar.all.the.time.kthxbai)

    That being said, though, a Today Show contributor suggested mixing “bad” cereals with “good” ones and demonstrated how to make a healthier bowl of Fruit Loops by mixing Cheerios in with a bowl of Toucan Sam’s fruity delights. I DON’T THINK SO.

    It may have been my lack of coffee or the fact that I have a very close relationship with cereal, but I actually said, “STOP STOP STOP” while he was pouring the two together.

    Do not mess with sugary cereal.

    Is there any cereal mixage you can tolerate? What is it?

  • My 13 year old is a cereal junkie.  He is presently in the kitchen eating Frosted Flakes.  He would eat cereal for every meal.  I’ve tried buying Kashi – he just gives me a look – even my husband won’t eat the healthy stuff.

    I remember when I was a kid putting spoonfuls of sugar on sugar cereal.  The thought of that makes me teeth hurt.    A lot of those “healthy” cereals have just as much sugar to make them palatable, so go ahead and have your sugar cereal.  Just remember to take a gummy multivitamin when you finish! 

  • We weren’t allowed to have sugar on our sugar cereal when I was a kid. I guess it’s one of the many reasons I liked brown sugar and oatmeal. You can conceal a LOT of brown sugar in that oatmeal.

    The only thing that I MAY have mixed would have been Honey Nut Cheerios with regular Cheerios. Even then I didn’t like mixing.

    However, I’ve never been one for cereal that has too much sugar because I don’t like sugary milk and I like to drink the milk at the end of my bowl. Now I pretty much eat Special K and occasionally have a bowl of LIFE or Honey Nut Cheerios.

  • No.  Cereals should be eaten on their own.  Mixing is a sin.

  • I think mixing is fine. My grandfather was an avid mixer, and my older brother carries on the tradition. We had many boxes of sugary cereal growing up, but they are extremely expensive and not hardly healthful. If our budget allows, I might allow sugary cereals as a treat – a Sunday breakfast or birthday splurge. Our budget usually doesn’t allow. I also dislike the branding – the mascots, the prizes, the commericals . . . Just call me a party-pooper, I guess.

    We do lots of oatmeal. Off-brand rolled oats. Fast, hot, filling, nutritious, cheap, and for your flavor or sugar fix, you can top it off with all kinds of assorted tastinesses – jam, honey, brown sugar, butter, molasses, dried apples, raisins, marmalade, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg . . . You can really make a bowl of oatmeal as unique as the scarfer.

    Did I mention it’s cheap?

  • I have never even heard of mixing. That combination sounds absolutely disgusting.

    Bleh.

  • the farthest i could go is various types of chex. like corn and rice. that sounds delightful. um, maybe rice crispies and kix and possibly corn flakes and special k, though i quite frankly prefer special k alone. but i really dont think these are the “sugary” cereals they’re talking about.  i was never one for sweetness in the am. just not my cup of…cereal. lol. 

  • No, no, no, you can’t mix cereal. It’s unnatural and strange!!!

  • I sometimes dont use milk. Frosted Flakes and Coca Cola got me through high school. I miss those days.

  • Somebody gets paid to go on TV and mix cereal?

  • I only use cocoa puffs to my bowl of wheaties so I can have an occasional bowl of cereal with “chocolate” milk

  • You can mix Cocoa Puff and Kix and they mesh well.

  • @EilisAngelos - yeah, i live on special k red berries. at my worst, i was doing two big boxes a week and one little one of the fruit and yogurt kind.
    @sonnetjoy - i do love oatmeal. i’m a big proponent of the raisin kind.

  • Interesting topic!  Cereal mixage…  If I recall correctly, my father used to mix Super Sugar Crisp (do they make that one anymore?) with something slightly more healthy – like Kix or Cheerios.  Then! He would dump a spoonful or two of sugar on top of it.  EWWW!

    Personally, I don’t mix my cereals.  It just isn’t right!  Just say “no” to cereal mixage!

  • Rice Krispies and Cocoa Rice Krispies shouldn’t be too bad, right? I think Cap ‘N Crunch and Trix would be an interesting mix as well… they would compliment each other well. I wouldn’t mix Cocoa Puffs with the generic brand, though. That’s like calling a dolphin a “drunk” because of its bottle-nose. It just doesn’t make sense.

  • I dont mixed my cereal with others (I use to do when I was younger)

    I dont put extra sugar of my cereal in the morning

  • I never eat cereal as its a processed “dead” food, in the same league nutritionally as a vitamin fortified McDonalds (minus some fat.  A lot of cereals have large amounts of added salt in addition to sugar).  I have no idea where the “cereal is healthy” idea arose.  The lesser evil would be a totally unprocessed cereal like porridge, but even then most of the micronutrition present in the raw food, the vitamins and enzymes have long since broken down.

    Since hunger is partly driven by micronutritional requirements, it goes without saying, any of you out there trying to lose weight should stay away from the stuff.
