  • If you could put together a dream team of 5 bands to perform for you and friends, who would they be?

    easy.

    1. Beatles circa January 1969 . . . amidst drug-addled spats about nothing in particular and recording endless takes for Abbey Road. John and Paul should not want to look at each other throughout the entire set. Then, in an anachronistic miracle, Badfinger appears from the wings and the two groups sing Day After Day together while George Harrison rocks out on the slide guitar.
    2. Frank Zappa (but moreso his backing band from Apostrophe (1974)) . . . starting with Cheepnis as they kick mopey Ringo from the drumset and finishing with Peaches en Regalia
    3. They Might Be Giants circa 2001 post-Mink Car playing covers of Talking Heads songs while David Byrne sits in the audience tapping his toes to John Flansburgh’s version of And She Was
    4. The Beach Boys during Pet Sounds (1966) just playing God Only Knows for an hour straight.
    5. . . . and Petula Clark from whenever she wants
5b. but Pavement would be standing behind the curtain and would only start playing when Petula hit the key change in Downtown . . . then she and Stephen Malkmus would do a duet of Sign of the Times and I Know A Place and oh my god I can’t get over this idea.

The audience would include Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake circa 2001 (sitting together and whispering sweet nothings into each other’s ears); the rest of Talking Heads but especially Tina Weymouth; Ben Folds and the Five; Wilco while recording Yankee Hotel Foxtrot; Sufjan Stevens and Morrissey. Joni Mitchell should show up and leave shortly thereafter – and while there’s this big to-do going on, Joan Didion should stop by, scribble notes in her notebook and leave.

COULD YOU IMAGINE THAT?! IT WOULD BE UNREAL.

I just answered this Featured Question, you can answer it too!

  • That would be pretty kickass!

  • id surely have different choices, but i can respect those just the same. nice list.

  • Very good choices!

  • *gasps* i want to marry your musical tastes.

seriously, you get a zillion points for the TMBG/talking heads thing.

  • mine will sound kind of course compared to yours but…

    1 Tool
    2 System of a Down
    3 Coheed and Cambria
    4 Rage Against the Machine
    5 KoRn

(i guess i like metal a little bit)

  • I love the lineup! Even though I ain’t a fan of the Beatles much anymore I do love me some Pavement!

  • What about ABBA, the BEE GEES, and Captain & Teneal???? KC and the SUNSHINE BAND anyone????

    LOL

  • so, chatting with you and eugenia and our sweet group pretty much made my day.

    even with the lag.

p.s. you have pretty hair too!

  • i agree with they might be giants. you forgot the best band ever – aerosmith.

  • Your musical tastes are impeccable.  I love Sufjan and Ben Folds.  And I saw TMBG in concert a few months ago in Chicago.  Amazing.

Thanks for the chat today!  Thank you, also, for the TRUE badge.  I am eternally grateful to you guys for doing that for me.

    *hugs* all around.

  • FIVE? ONLY FIVE?! I don’t know if I can do it. Here goes…

    1. The Dresden Dolls
    2. The Dandy Warhols
    3. Remy Zero
    4. The Spice Girls (blame nostalgia and the fact that I couldn’t afford to go to their reunion tour)
    5. And whereas you would have Britney and Justin circa 2001 in the audience, I would have them perform together. Although actually I would say Britney circa 2001. Justin now. But Justin would conveniently forget that he and Britney weren’t together anymore.

In the audience would be Regina Spektor, Feist, Imogen Heap, Metric, The Hard Lessons, Ben Folds, Sufjan Stevens, Blondie, The Eurythmics, Mandy Moore (whose music I don’t really like but I think she’s a lovely actress and seems like a nice person), The Scissors Sisters, St. Vincent, The Decemberists, Locksley, The Bravery, The Pierces, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Electric Six, Julius C, Stars, Editors, Of Montreal, and SO MANY MORE. Man, I love music way too much to pick 5. The top 3 are definitely accurate and staying there. But beyond that I can’t choose.

  • Do i get to play footsie with Sufjan?

  • this could be akin to asking me to open up my day-dream store of i-blend-whatever-you-want-me-to-and-serve-you-it-in-a-portable-drink-cup-form.

so say you want pizza, pasta, and hamburger all on the go and you love all three food. bring it to my store and ill use my unique blenders and give it to you for your on-the-go-life.

individually they work. stand alone they are great. i wonder if altogether if it would be anything but horrible.

  • Excellent choices Natalia, you have great musical taste.

  • Does Frank Zappa count as a band?

  • i friggin love they might be giants. ive had more than one person tell me they think fingertiops is what its like to be inside my brain. i can deal with that cause its one of my favorite songs.

  • HA HA HA count me in!

  • Me, I’d just go for JG Thirwell. Because he’s around ten bands in one.

  • That would be the best concert that never was.  Actually, I’d probably have Pink Floyd in there somewhere, but your lineup is great too.

  • that would be pretty amazing. haha

  • I don’t know what would be better: watching the concert, or sitting among the audience (assuming I can’t mix, combine, and match the possibilities).

  • no offence, but my first thought when I saw this fq on the frontpage was… how daft.
but anyhow, you sure have a vvviiivid image of what you want, hahaha

  • no spice girls? wow..

I tried to get in but i guess there were too many people in the chat. Next time.

  • Okaaaaay, that would be fantastic.

  • Hey, thanks for replying to my entry in the Xanga chat-board and showing me how to embed the videos, was muchos appretiated. All the best.
