  • so you bounce to the left and you sail to the right

ARGH! I had a whole post written, forgot that I wasn’t logged in and when I submitted it, the post was gone. Au revoir, entry 1.0.

Sooooo Czech Dream, probably the best documentary that I saw this year, finally came out on DVD yesterday after a year and change of being in limbo. It’s a senior project by two Czech film students who create a massive ad campaign for a hypermarket (think Wal-Mart meets Costco in an enclosed strip mall – there’s really no US equivalent) that didn’t actually exist. They create posters, radio spots, commercials, inserts for newspapers and an ear-grabber of a theme song . . . and on the day that the “store” opens in an open meadow, you find out if anyone actually shows up to the opening. It’s poignant without being preachy, and you can see how easily people are affected by advertising.

I saw the movie in May (at the annual film fest held where I went to college) and the last time I saw it, I thought – and talked ad nauseum – about post-Communist spending mentality, the devaluation of currency and how American tendencies have infiltrated other nations’ habits, too . . . but this time, I thought more about morality in advertising, dishonesty, what’s kosher and what’s not and whether or not I should be furious. Beyond fascinating.

So, in conclusion, Netflix it, go to Blockbuster, something! Just see it. I promise you won’t mind spending an hour and a half with these guys.

At the top of the box, though, it said “Morgan Spurlock presents…” as in the Supersize Me! guy. What he has to do with this project (except, maybe for funding) is beyond me. Get out of my Czech documentary! NOW.

FQ was about what your wishlist included. I have no idea what I want . . . except maybe a six-passenger private jet that makes express flights from NYC to Columbus whenever I want (gift-wrapped, please – I like blue and orange color-wise).

  • Ok… Natalie insistes and so I must!

    Hope you get your jet!

  • Hey Natalie! You should see it. The west side of Columbus has probably 5 inches of snow right now. I’m looking out my office window towards the Fawcett Center. I can see it – so the flurries are not TOO bad, but they are still coming down pretty hard.

If I had a camera, I’d take a picture for you. I suspect you could find some pictures at the Columbus Dispatch web site or one of the local radio/television web sites if you really wanted.

Has this weather hit where you are yet?

  • kudos to the jet…although you might get a better chance on delivery it it was blue and yellow (think michigan state).

I’ll take a look at that documentary if I get a chance….it’s that holiday season again….and time’s a flyin’ by.

    till later.

  • I live on the far east side – Reynoldsburg. I normally get to work in 15-20 minutes (I live close to 270, so I can take that to 670 and up 315). This morning I left at 6:00, traffic at its fastest was about 20 mph, and it took me about 50 minutes. The 670/315 ramp was closed because of a bus going off the road or something. It was weird – 670 was in much better shape than I71 through the middle of town!

The only snow we had before this was a few flakes – barely enough to see. So of course, all the people are crazy.

As for schools, Channel 4 was showing over 100 schools that either cancelled or had a late start. Reynoldsburg had a 2 hr delayed start, to give the city a chance to make certain the streets were managable by the buses. You don’t want a school bus stuck on a back street…

  • i’ll go add it to my netflix queue now

  • Would that be a 2 engine or 3 engine aircraft, Ma’am?  Personally, I believe that 3 is too outre, n’est pas, however is is the style nowadays.  Anyway, will we deliver it to LaGuardia, JFK, Newark Liberty, Terterboro or Essex County?  thxkbye…

  • Hah, I hope you appreciated that video. My kennedy impression SUCKS according to the audio uplink on the work cam.

    /sniffle

  • I figured I had it privatized…but then you kids and your superior xanga technology!

My voice sounds so…high pitched in that. Golly.

  • No, really, I feel girlish now. GIRLISH.

Maybe I should stop smoking so many cigarettes, though…ahem.

I imagine you probably get lots of perks. Me, I’m…well, someday I’ma visit the offices, I get a chance to hit up the city.

  • There are actually pictures of me in existence smoking five at a time, but that’s when I was protesting them changing the smoking zones at my college by chainsmoking three packs in twenty minutes with my friend Prescott in the old zone.

Not. A. Wise. Idea. I felt like an ashtray for a week.

I only doublefist coffee if I have papers to write. Which, fortunately, I won’t for awhile. So it’s just pot black for me.

My office…is so dead today. Yesterday it was a madhouse, today it’s like a ghost town. Tomorrow, it’ll be a haunted carnival!

  • Well, I could have done that, but A: I was already sorta maybe a little bit kinda just a touch on the Dean’s shit list for other hoorawin’s and rascally behaviors I’d gotten up to on campus before, and B: it wouldn’t have been as extreme and unhealthy and downright crazy!

  • Actually, the reason I was on the Dean’s Shit List rather than the Dean’s List was pretty funny, me and my group of friends, the Lounge (there’s something about them in protecteds ages ago) were rather loud and profane and comfortably obnoxious as all college buddies are to each other…when he was bringing around the Presidents (or somethin’ fancy) of Cornell and Ithaca College right through our wing.

Hoo yeah. We all got piled in his office and we all got the king daddy of lectures.

  • I pretended to be an exchange student when the welcoming committee for a bunch of out-of-towners was crawling through and heard me going on about…well, I’m too polite to leave it in your comments section, but suffice to say BOY WAS MY FACE RED. Except not, I said I was Boris Streptovictch from the Russian Sexual Committee.

  • If only I’d said I was Boris Ivanovich! Then I coulda stuck a Night Watch reference in there.

You know me and references…except it wasn’t out then.

The only staff at my college who likes me is this english teacher who…well, I was once there hanging out with a dealer when he bought a dime from him. I still think that’s hysterical.

  • Aw, I love Robbie Coltrane!

  • Have you seen Cracker? That’s really his best work. Him as a caustic, foul-mouthed, alcoholic gambling psychologist. It’s brilliant. I gave my girlfriend the DVDs for all three seasons.

  • interesting, im gonna have to check it out.

  • You don’t like Morgan Spurlock? I saw Supersize Me earlier this year. I thought it was pretty interesting.

I like documentaries. I check them out from the library.

  • I am addicted to documentaries… thanx for the recommendation!

  • i keep wanting to watch this and that and this and that and my mental list of “yet-to-watch movies/shows/series” keeps piling up but everytime there’s much more interesting things to do like, um, going online, and.. going online.. and um..

i do apologize for the multitude of “and”s. and “and”s. oh i’m bored.

i don’t want a stupid jet! ha ha ha all i want for christmas is money!! mooore moooney!! >)

  • Thanks for the thoughts and the mini!!!!  You can take credit for helping me share the news!

  • hm. well i’ll share you my money if you fly me as well ;P

  • Well, since I’m a halfie (Jewish and Catholic) I have to deal with both holidays, so I’m much less pleased about the entire process.

    I AM THE DAYWALKER

    or something like that…

  • Damn straight I’m dreamy. Who cares about wit or verbosity or talent, so long as I’ve got the chiseled jawline and great taste in clothes.

but no, seriously, being raised Jewish is waaaay overrated.

  • Well, I had to live with my catholic family for a summer, and let me tell you…I ain’t raising any kids that way. I think Mass could be considered inhumane treatment when you get right down to it.

Of course, temple isn’t exactly the most exciting experience of one’s life…but I haven’t been in oh-so-many years, as my mother calls and reminds me about frequently.

My mother is Woody Allen’s worst nightmare sometimes.

  • Catholic resentment, Temple, or Woody Allen?

  • Melania knitted that beautiful garment. She’ll probably make you one if you ask her to. Woman does some mean knitting.
Someday you can sell it for a million dollars because i’m famous.

  • i hate when that happens.

i’m a compulsive ctrl+c freak for that very reason. when I feel i have a good groove going and a gem at my fingertips (which isn’t often), it’s right click, select all, copy, paste. have it on clipboard, save it onto xanga private, no comments allowed or email it to myself, maybe open up word pad. ANYTHING!! just don’t lose it!!!

  • We are a feeble lot of consumers,I shop very little ,I have not been to a mall in 15 yrs except for lunch at the ‘Cheesecake Factory’  at The King of Prussia Mall.I will get that movie when I can ,it looks good.

  • they are? that’s great. thanks!

  • been there and done that…. how frustrating when a good post disappears, chalk it up to it was too good for the rest of us!  used to play the coffee houses  (hard to believe!)

  • i’m fine, heh. just got the stitches removed today and doctor says the wound is healing very nicely :D

  • Oh, yes…. Joan Baez; Janis Joplin; Peter, Paul and Mary…. crazy to think about! My kids see me as Homeschool mom, Pastor’s wife and stable (lol) but now that they are older they see that all these past adventures made me, ME! I still play guitar but mostly in church. But love to play songs like, “Leaving on a Jet Plane” when my youngest headed off to college last August….. He surprisingly likes my generation music…. A lot of remix and some other stuff too, like John Denver etc….. More later…. fun to reminisce…. Sallie

  • alright, yeah. i think i’ll take a look-see.

  • ryc: i used to love them too.. but it was a “waste of money”, so i was mostly reduced to watching other kids making their (ugly) work. it was so much fun today doing it with other kids half my height XD

  • me wants it now.

  • sum1 sent it to alot of people saying things like xsanga was running out of names so people who have like 3 sites need to shut them down and keep 1 site so they can get more names bac

  • ok i will!

thanks 4 clearing that up 4 me and my friends!

  • I don’t mind spending a few dollars to go see it especially if they are U.S. dollars which are worthless these days anyway.

  • re: Theo;

I keep adding Koch pictures to our facebook group! I’m always on the hunt…
