Why Living in NYC Is Awesome, Reason #289342357648
My friend Kate told me about Upright Citizens Brigade when I first moved to the city – it’s an improv comedy group that has shows throughout the week for a reasonable price . . . on Sundays, they have a show at 9:30 that you can see for free as long as you wait in line outside for about two hours. This is a long time, especially in the cold, but it’s good bonding time, you meet fun people in line who will talk to you about TV and it’s something we’ll tell our grandkids (“when I was your age, we waited in the cold for two hours – uphill . . . both ways! wait . . . “).
ANYWAY, with the ongoing writers’ strike, we knew there would probably be some fun people there.
We saw Paul Scheer (from Best Week Ever) going into the grocery store next door, so we knew he was coming and he’s been consistently funny each time I’ve seen him. Yay.
Amy Poehler introduces UCB, herself and the people coming in – in addition to Paul and the usual UCBers, Rachel Dratch and Seth Meyers (who is very cute) from SNL were there, and so was . . . wait for it . . .
John Krasinski!!!!111!!!1 (Jim from The Office, if you’re not a rabid fan like I am). He’s adorable in person – tall (6’4″ish?) with pretty blue eyes and a niiiice smile. My fangirl is showing. I liked that he wasn’t stuck-up like you’d think most Hollywood types would be – if you asked Charlie Sheen to help you move your couch down a flight of stairs, do you think he’d do it? I think he’d collapse under the sheer weight of it. Based on the hour and a half we spent in the same room, I think John is the type of guy who would help you move the couch and then would probably grill you some burgers and talk to you about ninjas. We would be buddies.
I’ve gotta buy a couch and then hunt him down. I’m on the third floor, man.

We are planning on stopping in New York for a couple of days after doing a tour of America for a couple of weeks.
omg LUCKY. this is why living in georgia sucks. john krasinksi doesn’t pop in down here. : (
Wow–i’ve been to UCB many times but never seen any celebs. I have always had a good time there though..
How is the book you’re reading?
Been to NYC once…loved it… wanted to see a good improv show, didn’t get the chance…
Thanks for letting me know about UCB…tooo coooool.
as soon as you mentioned John Kransinski, I went :wide-eyed:
altho rainn wilson showing up would have been just as cool.
i’ve been to new york once and for the whopping duration of one day and night. but it was a nice day and night.
That sounds like it would make one fun evening (the show, not the moving a couch up three flights of stairs thing). Ha.
This sounds really dumb, but I think standing outside in the cold would be a much welcomed change for me right now…dang ‘ole Texas still thinks it needs to be 80degrees outside during the day. Hello, Fall? Lame! There has been mention of colder temperatures on the way, though, and I just pray that they get here soon, else I might just go crazy.
I can get cold here (I’m in Dallas, to be exact), we have more ice days than snow days usually. We get a few days of teens or so, but usually it stays around 30 or above.
I love reading your posts… it brings back many good memories of my days in NYC… I loved the theatre, the improvs and SHOPPING! and the Village… Oh the restaurants, so many good ones…. Charles in the Village, Brittany ‘du Soir, both gone I am sure…. but what fun we had… I have lived all over the world and enoyed the European lifestyle, the Southern experience, the laid back country life, and the life of living by the sea….. but still my NY roots are there and I enjoy thinking on those times. Florida is really different, lots of northerners that add a flavor of their individual states, no one here is from here (a few but not many!) It is like NY in the Sun! Anyway, I’ve babbled long enough…. HAPPY THANKSGIVING to you and yours, may you find God’s blessings abundant this day and always!
That’s pretty awesome! Rumor has it the cast of 30 Rock performed at UCB last night!
I LOVE Jim. =) The Office is the greatest show ever. I am forever envious of you.
